Lycos receives their web results from a variety of
sources. Overture provides the Sponsored entries. The
results from the "Popular" section of Lycos come primarily
from the Lycos web editors, and secondarily from Direct Hit.
In the "Web Sites" section, results come from the Open
Directory, Fast Search, and the Lycos web crawler. The Open
Directory powers the category links at the top of the "Web
Sites" section, and also provides some web site matches.
Below the category links are web site links, which come
primarily from Fast Search. Secondary links are provided by
the Lycos web crawler.
Although it is not as significant in the results rankings
as it used to be, the Lycos web crawler is still spidering
the web. The Lycos web crawler does not weigh META tags
heavily. Indexing is based on an algorithm that takes a look
at components of the URL name, Meta title, text body
headings and subheadings, how frequently words appear, where
these words appear in relationship to one another, as well
as a document abstract (based on full body text). Any web
page that does not have a minimum of 75 words is not indexed
but Frames are supported. Lycos does not care about case
sensitivity. They will not allow special characters in text,
so avoid ?, =, and $. Pages are added in 3 to 6 weeks.

Steps to Carry Out the Tip:
- Lycos likes keywords in the title of your page. So,
be sure your title contains your most important keywords.
If you leave out the title tag Lycos will create a title
for you using the first line on your page. It is still
best to use a title so you control what is displayed in
the search results.
- Use your most important keywords in your title, and
in the text at the top of your page.Lycos penalizes for
invisible text and text too small to read. These
techniques will bump your page to the bottom of the
results. See the following URLs for more information and
to register your pages:
- Lycos supports stemming. i.e. run will return results
for running and runner. Lycos may also support
synonyms.
- Lycos uses the first 150 characters of your page as
the summary it displays in search results. So make sure
searchers see what you want them to see.
- Lycos does not support (it ignores) Meta Tags and
image maps, but link popularity has a positive effect on
ranking. Lycos doesn't learn how frequently you update
your site. It indexes ALT tags, and ignores !comments and
doesn't support image maps. In fact, a good way to
control your description is to put it in an alt tag with
an image at the top of your page. Lycos ignores some
common words and doesn't add them to it's index.
- Optimization technique summary
- Create short, (no less than 50 words) doorway pages
to be indexed by Lycos.
- Use the <title> tag to control what the title
the searcher sees in your results.
- Use the header tag with your most important keywords
in a sentence.
- Use an image <alt> tag to control the
description of your site.
